The Owl, Hawnby
A completely refurbished country pub and restaurant with en-suite rooms in the heart of the North Yorkshire.
19th Century Inn restored to it's former glory
Our Story
Formerly the Inn at Hawnby, the Owl on the Hawnby Estate, has been transformed into a country pub and restaurant with ensuite accommodation in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

Hawnby is a nice village in a scenic area of the North York Moors. The pub has outdoor benches and tables with a nice outlook in the summer sun.
I didn't have food, but it is known for that. There is a short kids menu (sausage and chips, pasta and sauce etc) which I mention only because it isn't mentioned on the website.
The good thing about a drink here is that you can also go for a walk! A short but steep climb pretty much opposite the pub takes you up Hawnby Hill, which is a nice walk in the area with views in all directions. Doesn't take much more than 30 minutes return.

A couple of visits this week for a meal. Friendly staff, good beer and excellent food. Also dog friendly in the bar - recommend booking in advance.
We've been staying next door in Tiggywinkle Cottage which is also excellent and a 2 minute walk away.

We stopped at this lovely dog friendly village pub while travelling in our motorhome. Very friendly staff and locals. Had a lovely meal and it felt so cosy and welcoming. We ending staying the night in our campervan in the pub carpark. Food and service and people were all lovely. Would highly recommend. Gem of a place.5

Followed directions to Hawnby and came across a sign on the side of a building - The Owl. Parked near the village hall and wandered over to what we believed to be the pub. Thought it was actually closed. It was only when we looked at the sign that we thought that perhaps if we went in the direction of the ‘arrow’, we might come across the pub.
I’m so glad we did! A lovely setting. It was warm enough to sit outside. The Yorkshire rarebit was very tasty. We would definitely recommend having lunch here and so glad that we didn’t give up!

A welcoming country pub in stunning surroundings offering quality food and friendly service. Traditional quality roast beef and pork sunday lunch options plus exceptional specials including roast hake served with mussels and wild garlic on fregola sardinian pasta. Desserts included brioche donuts with custard and quince jam.

Absolutely beautiful building and the decor is lovely, modern yet cosy.
We went as a couple with our dog for some food on a Thursday evening.
We sat in the bar as had a dog which wasn’t a problem - there was a gorgeous fire on too which was great!
The food choice was quite limited - and only after seeing other couples with steak dishes did we realise there was a specials board. We definitely would’ve ordered the steak had we been told about the specials.
But I get the smaller menu for less busy months with working in hospitality our selves so that wasn’t a problem.
We both went for the gammon and we weren’t disappointed - a very generous portion that was very tasty. I had a side of green too, again plenty of lovely fresh greens.
We didn’t have room for dessert but the sorbet looked tempting.
Staff were also lovely, would definitely go back if in the area again,

We popped in here on Sunday after looking for a nearby Pub after our walk at the White Horse. All the front of house staff were friendly and welcoming. The Pub has a good atmosphere. We had a look at the menu which looked great for us.
They have a good selection of Cask Ales.
Subsequently I have booked 2 rooms to come back and stay and dine and we are very much looking forward to it.

Have been coming to this country pub since I was a child. Lovely to see it after a beautiful refurbishment. The staff and the roaring fire in the bar were as welcoming as ever and the lunch menu was a feast - in the end we went for venison cottage pie and Toulouse sausages - both 10/10. I love the location of The Owl in the middle of the North York moors and this was a great stop off on our way to Helmsley. Will be back as soon as we can.
